Frequently Asked Questions

What is an HSN code?

HSN stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature, an internationally standardized system for classifying goods, developed by the World Customs Organization. In India, HSN codes are used under the GST regime to classify goods for taxation. The system uses 2, 4, 6, or 8 digits, and the more digits, the more specific the classification.

What is the difference between HSN code and HS code?

They refer to the same system. HS code is the international term used in global trade. HSN code is the term India uses under the GST regime. The first 6 digits are identical, and India adds 2 more digits for domestic classification purposes.

Is HSN code mandatory for GST invoices?

Yes, since 1 April 2021 under Notification No. 78/2020-Central Tax. Businesses with aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore must show a 4-digit HSN code on B2B tax invoices (optional on B2C invoices), and businesses above ₹5 crore must show a 6-digit code on all invoices. Since the February 2025 return period, the HSN summary in Table 12 of GSTR-1 must also be reported with 4 or 6 digits, split into B2B and B2C tabs. For exports and imports, the 8-digit ITC-HS code is always required on customs documents regardless of turnover.

How do I find the HSN code for my product without logging into the GST portal?

Type the product name in the search box above. Results appear instantly with the HSN code and GST rate shown on each result. No login, no CAPTCHA required. If search does not find your product, use the Browse tab to navigate Section → Chapter → Heading and find the exact code.

Are the GST rates on this tool accurate?

Yes, the rates reflect GST 2.0 rates effective 22 September 2025, based on CBIC rate notifications including Notification No. 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate) and the Nil rate schedule. Each HSN code is matched against the schedule entries in those notifications, so the rate shown is the one the notification assigns to that heading or subheading. GST rates can change with new GST Council decisions, so always verify against the latest CBIC notification for critical tax filings.

What happened to the 12% and 28% GST slabs?

Both general slabs were removed under GST 2.0 from 22 September 2025. Most goods that were taxed at 12% moved to 5%, and most goods that were taxed at 28% moved to 18%. Aerated sugary drinks, large cars, motorcycles above 350cc, yachts and private aircraft moved to the new 40% slab on the same date, and pan masala and tobacco products followed on 1 February 2026 under Notification No. 19/2025-Central Tax (Rate). One exception remains at 12%: building bricks, fly ash bricks and earthen roofing tiles under Notification No. 14/2025.

What is the GST rate for gold jewellery?

Gold jewellery (HSN 7113) attracts 3% GST, a rate GST 2.0 left unchanged. Raw gold bars and coins (HSN 7108) are also taxed at 3%. Rough diamonds (HSN 7102) attract 0.25% GST, and cut and polished diamonds attract 1.5%.
